When should I use encyclopedias in my research?

Answer

You can use encyclopedias when you need introductory information on a topic before starting your in-depth research. They can give you ideas for your research and help narrow your topic.  Additionally, you can use encyclopedias when you have no prior knowledge on a topic that is an element of your research.

A note about using encyclopedias for research assignments: Please keep in mind that citing encyclopedias as sources may not be allowed for a given research assignment. Be sure to review your research assignment instructions and consult with your instructor if you have questions about this.
